Why Home Health Aides Need CPR, First Aid & BBP Training
By Sheila Gemma ยท February 22, 2026
Home health aides provide personal care to some of California's most medically vulnerable residents โ elderly individuals, post-surgical patients, and people with chronic illness โ often working alone without immediate access to clinical backup. When an emergency occurs, the aide is the first and only responder until EMS arrives.
California CDPH Requirements
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) embeds CPR and First Aid training within its approved home health aide training curricula. Home health agencies universally require current CPR and First Aid certification as a condition of employment, and most require recertification on a two-year cycle.
AHA-Certified CPR & First Aid Training
Our AHA-certified instructors provide CPR and First Aid training covering cardiac emergency response, choking management, fall injury first aid, diabetic emergencies, stroke recognition, and wound care basics. Certifications are issued same-day, with official AHA eCards delivered digitally within a few days.
Common Emergencies in Home Care Settings
Home health aides should be prepared to respond to sudden cardiac arrest, choking, falls with injury, diabetic emergencies, stroke, and seizures โ all of which occur at elevated frequency in the populations they serve.
Bloodborne Pathogen Training
Aides who assist with wound care, catheter management, or personal hygiene have occupational exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials. OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen standard requires documented annual BBP training for all covered employees.
On-Site Training
We bring training to your agency's location and can schedule group sessions to certify new hires and recertify existing staff efficiently.
