Why K-12 Schools Need CPR, First Aid, AED & BBP Training

By Sheila Gemma ยท February 10, 2026

Schools are responsible for the safety of hundreds of students and staff every day. Cardiac events, choking, severe allergic reactions, and sports injuries can occur in classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and on athletic fields. Having trained staff and accessible AEDs can make the difference between life and death in the critical minutes before EMS arrives.

Regulatory Requirements in California

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) requires CPR and First Aid certification โ€” including adult, child, and infant CPR โ€” as a condition of earning a preliminary teaching credential. AHA-certified training satisfies this requirement. Athletic coaches and staff supervising student sports programs are expected to maintain current CPR and First Aid certification as a condition of employment at most California school districts. California law also requires AED placement in schools and mandates that trained personnel be available to operate them.

AHA-Certified CPR, First Aid & AED Training

Our AHA-certified instructors provide CPR, First Aid, and AED training covering adult, child, and infant CPR โ€” meeting the multi-age requirement of the CTC credentialing standard. Certifications are issued same-day, with official AHA eCards delivered digitally within a few days.

Common Emergencies in School Settings

School staff should be prepared to respond to sudden cardiac arrest in students and adults, choking, severe allergic reactions, sports injuries, seizures, and asthma emergencies.

Bloodborne Pathogen Training

School nurses, athletic trainers, and staff designated as first aid responders have occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials. OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) requires documented annual BBP training for all covered employees. BBP training helps school staff respond safely to bleeding injuries, nosebleeds, and other exposure situations that arise regularly in school environments.

On-Site Training

We bring training to your school and can schedule sessions during staff development days, after school hours, or during the summer to minimize classroom disruption.
